FOREST PARK — The Fairfield Indians' first win under new coach Doc Gamble will have to wait at least one more week. Fairfield dropped a 28-6 decision at Winton Woods on Friday, Sept. 5.
The Indians (0-3) had a good chance to win each of their first two games but that was not the case against the Fort Ancient Valley Conference powerhouse.
"That's probably the best team we're going to face this year," Gamble said.
On the ground, Winton Woods (3-0) outgained Fairfield 383-0. That stat pretty much summed up the evening for the Indians but remarkably they were still in it until late in the second half.
After Fairfield's first drive bogged down at its own 43, Robert Mincey unleashed a beautiful punt backing up Winton Woods to its own five. The poor field position didn't bother the Warriors though as junior quarterback Dominique Brown guided them to a 95-yard touchdown drive that took only 1:39.
Winton Woods stretched its lead to 14-0 when Jeremiah Goins bulled five yards into the end zone for his second score of the first quarter.
Then the Indians ball-hawking defense showed up. Fairfield's junior Josh Scott made a twisting, athletic interception near the goal line.
On the next Winton Woods possession, Fairfield defensive lineman Russell Turner recovered a fumble. Cornerback Gibson Dweh completed the first half takeaway trifecta for the Indians with an interception.
"That's the way it's going to be this year," Gamble said. "Most of our best skills guys are on defense."
In the second quarter, Fairfield got on the scoreboard when quarterback Justin McCray connected with Brandon Commodore on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 2:37 left in the half.
Winton Woods answered with a 64 yard drive that made it 21-6 at halftime.
"That was huge," said Gamble. "There were two questionable pass interference calls on that drive and that hurt us."
It was still 21-6 with
4:10 remaining when Winton Woods put the game away with a Jeremiah Goins touchdown.
"The kids are playing. This loss is on me. I need to coach them better," Gamble said.
