BADIN 38, ROGER BACON 21
Rams start out fast and never look back
Saturday, October 11, 2008
CINCINNATI — It was a record-breaking and title-clinching night for the Badin High School football team at Roger Bacon.
Rams quarterback Zach Toerner rushed for a career-high 150 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 272 yards and three scores to lead Badin to a 38-21 victory Friday night, Oct. 10, at Bron Bacevich Memorial Stadium.
The victory was the third in a row and fifth in the last six games for the Rams, and it clinched at least a share of the Greater Catholic League Central Division championship.
"It feels great," said Badin coach Dave Wirth after watching his team improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the GCL Central. "When you win this league, it probably feels better than winning most."
Roger Bacon, which slipped to 3-5, 2-3 GCL Central, was never in the game as Badin scored touchdowns on its first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the first quarter.
"We knew if we got up on top that they weren't going to come back," Toerner said. "We feel like we're on a mission, and we're not going to slow down for anyone."
Toerner capped the Rams' opening drive with a 1-yard run, and 16 seconds later he was back in the end zone after Jake Wurzelbacher intercepted Jorian Hudson and returned the ball 30 yards to the Roger Bacon 2.
"The ball hit off the receiver's hands and then off his feet and just popped right to me," Wurzelbacher said. "I thought I got in the end zone, though. I really want to see that film."
Even though Wurzelbacher came up 2 yards shy of the touchdown on his interception return, he did find the end zone twice on passes of 14 and 10 yards from Toerner.
Wurzelbacher finished with three catches for 41 yards and also booted a 29-yard field goal. Alex Rieman hauled in seven balls for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Scott Staarmann broke the century mark with three receptions for 109 yards.
"We tried to put pressure on (Toerner), but we knew that's when he was most dangerous," Roger Bacon coach Kevin Huxel said.
Toener completed 15-of-22 passes, and he ran a career-high 29 times to give the Rams a 100-yard rusher in their third consecutive game.
"My legs are kind of tired," Toerner said. "I don't usually run that much, but that's the great thing about this team — everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to get the win.
"And the O-line gets all the credit," Toerner continued. "They have come so far."
Badin's defense also came up big despite allowing Hudson to rush for 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Rams forced three turnovers, with Chris Leuthold and Wurzelbacher each intercepting passes and Brett McKinney recovering a fumble that Staarmann forced on a sack of Hudson.
