COLERAIN — No one would recommend going to Colerain to break a 21-game losing streak, but that's what the Fairfield Indians faced on Friday, Oct. 10.
The perennial Greater Miami Conference power dispatched the Indians with a convincing 52-14 victory.
"They're the best and we have to get to that level," Fairfield coach Doc Gamble said. "There's a huge discrepancy between their size and strength our size and strength."
The Indians (0-8 overall, 0-5 GMC) again struggled on offense as Colerain (7-1, 4-1) outgained the Indians 433 to 159. The Cardinals had 379 yards rushing compared to only 10 for Fairfield.
Still the game could not have started any better for the Indians.
Fairfield's Isaiah Scott fielded the opening kickoff close to the sideline at the 2-yard line and stumbled, but he set himself, followed his blockers and raced 98 yards to put the Indians on top 7-0. It was Fairfield's first kick return for TD this year.
Even though the Fairfield defense forced a three and out, the lead didn't last long. Justin McCray's third-down pass was picked off by Colerain's Nicholas Priessman, who returned it 25 yards to knot the game at 7.
"Justin threw the ball where he was supposed to but some receivers ran bad routes," Gamble said. "We're beat up and we're banged up and we have some new guys playing."
Colerain put the game out of reach when quarterback Greg Tabar rambled 53 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second half. After punting on its first possession of the game, Colerain scored the next seven times it had the ball.
For Fairfield, McCray finished 17-of-24 for 149 yards, one interception and one touchdown toss to Rayshawn Walton.
