CINCINNATI — The idea of renaming a downtown street after late Reds legend Joe Nuxhall may be gaining steam.
Cincinnati Vice Mayor David Crowley brought a proposal to Cincinnati City Council during its Wednesday, March 26, meeting asking to rename the zero to one hundred block of Main Street to Joe Nuxhall Way, according to Local 12 WKRC.
Extras
The former Reds pitcher and broadcaster, a Hamilton native and longtime Fairfield resident, passed away from complications with lymphoma in November at age 79.
If approved, the area named for Nuxhall would become the official address for Great American Ball Park and the Cincinnati Reds.
Crowley's office said the idea passed through council without any objections. The plan now goes to a special committee that considers such name changes.
Reds' CEO Bob Castellini originally announced the plan to try to name a portion of Main Street after Nuxhall during his keynote speech at the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce dinner on Jan. 25.
Crowley hopes to change the street name by June 10, according to Local 12. The Reds plan to honor the longtime broadcaster that day.
June 10 is also the city of Hamilton night at GABP. It marks the 64th anniversary of Nuxhall's history-making pitching debut at age 15 as the youngest player in the major leagues.
The Reds will be playing the St. Louis Cardinals that night, the same franchise Nuxhall pitched against in his debut.

I think that Joe did a lot for the community. But I also agree that city council should spend it’s time on more important issues. Let Joe hurry up and have his street. That way city council can quit making excuses and get back to real work, like crapping up the Banks project, alienating the black community, mismanaging city funds, and spending millions of dollars to move a statue 50 feet that no one actually notices the change. I see there are a couple of fish frys and spaghetti dinners at various locations throughout the weekend. How can we have fish frys and spagehtti dinners when there are foreclosures, wars, potholes and all sorts of problems? We all need to stop doing anything frivilous and just focus on the world’s problems, 24/7. Quit your jobs, drop out of school, don’t leave your mortaged house. Cancel all special events, concerts, etc. and just worry about my mortgage. Everyone needs to focus on my mortgage.

WHO GIVES A S*! This world has important issues going on! Frankly, I’m getting kind of tired of having to look at that ugly mug of his EVERYDAY it seems, in the paper! Let a “dead dog” lay!

So far, we have people wanting to discuss foreclosures, unemployment, abd corruption, and somehow compare that to honoring a man and his convictions. Where do these issues evolve from? They are a product of lack of Character, such as loyalty, integrity, responsibility, spirit, etc. Joe Nuxhall has stood for these values, not only when it was “politically correct” to do so, but stood when no when else would. Joe had a quiet strength that will go on longer than most of you will ever live!!

If you want to name a street after Joe, it should be Ford Blvd because that is where he practiced every day.

This Nuxall guy did nothing for the average person except get our taxes raised for that foolish Elderly Service Levy. He did a commercial saying he hoped his mother would never need it. Give me a break, it is only for people who have never worked in their lives or buns who never saved a dime and lived the good life until they got old. The street should be named, Joe’s Tax Street.

Joe Nuxhall was an Icon for baseball for the Cincinnati area as a baseball player, Reds baseball announcer, and a very nice person to be remembered. Naming a street for him would be an honor to the person that people in the Cincinnati area loved.

Yes, I’m sure changing a couple signs of one section of one street in one city are going to cost each taxpayer statewide hundreds of thousands of dollars. That money should go into typing and spelling classes. I’m sure they would have honored Nuxhall while he was alive if they could. Yes, he was ill, but he wasn’t expected to die when he did. He was even interviewed that very morning, and he seemed optimistic.

What’s all the complaining about, Joe was a good person, he did a lot for the community. I do agree it should have been done while he was alive. The street name change was not done because he died of lymphoma. It was for all the good things he did for the community. I never saw him ignore anyone; even in the middle of the grocery store.

Let’s don’t stop there. Cincinnati should be Nuxnati. Stadium should be Nuxpark. What a waste of time & money. Why not change the name when he was alive? Why do people’s value change after death? If he deserves it now, hw should have deserved it before he died. This si another waste of time and a joke.

I don’t see how a man can be considered “noble” after seeing him overly drunk, cursing like a sailor and refusing to sign autographs for about 100 jr high and high school kids. Especially, when it all took place at a retreat area owned by a church! I was either 15 or 16 at the time, but I never cared for him since and can’t believe the Reds rep that drove him actually let him come out in that unfit condition.

I have mixed feelings about it all. I’m not a fan of him at all, but people in Cincy seem to find him a God so, why not name a street after him. They have named streets after people for a lot less. It will happen no matter what anyones opinion on it is.

The renaming of a street has nothing to do with the way a person has died. Martin Luther King wasn’t given a street named after him just because he was shot on a balcony. The nameing is for how the person lived their life. Nuxhall was not just all about baseball but help in his communtiy a great deal. Has nothing to do with the manner in which he died.

Where is all this anger coming from, Al? I agree with Jim. The street is not being renamed because Joe Nuxhull was a “big shot” or because of why he died. Where are your values? Joe Nuxhull had so many wonderful qualities, made many contributions to the community, and was loved by the community. Could it be you’re a little bit jealous? The world would be better off if more of us were more like him.

Changing one street name and its signs isn’t going to cost millions of dollars. Nor will it cost enough to actually go towards any of the issues you mentioned, Sailor. Forest for the trees, y’all. Just one street getting renamed for a longtime contributor to the community. I never in my day thought people would get offended because someone was getting honored like this.

Who Cares Let See Foreclosure is at a all time high, The Banks are in Deep Trouble,Unemployment is High, And we have a Administation Goverment that does not care. Now they are going to spend Tax Dollars to change a name of a street. While we are talking about Name Chages Does the Governor of Ohio welcome People or does the People welcome them. Should the sign say the People of Ohio welcome You and Save the Millions of Tax Dollars Spent Changing the Signs in all the Parks and Entries to Ohio

Apparently some of these bozo’s have no clue why we would want to honor such a man. Maybe that is the problem. There aren’t enough people that would understand Nuxhall’s character and reputation. He was a well-respected man and he earned it the honest way! I say we honor him by naming a street after him!!

Joe never considered himself a big shot. He was a real human being who cared deeply about the Hamilton-Fairfield-Cincinnati area and made a great personal effort to make it a better area than it was when he arrived. He had a great efect on all those communities and his death is our loss. Anything we can do to keep that selfless spirit alive is well worth it. Obviously, you never met the man. But, if you have been in this area any length of time, you have had benefits from him.

Dr.B is correct. Besides, every city changes street names nowadays; it’s not a bfd.
We’re all going to die of something. Does that make us worthy of recognition? Mr. Nuxhall deserves the recognition.
Peace Out.

So unless you are a big shot and have some disease then you dont have a street named after you. Ok I have a friend who died of cancer, lets see now, they were not a radio announcer so they dont have a street named after them. I say leave the damn street names alone; Oh Dr B I did forget to take my meds;

AL: The street would not be renamed because he dies of lymphoma. The street would be renamed to honor Nuxhall as a player, longtime broadcaster, and longtime resident of the Cincinnati area.
