Saturday, June 28, was a banner day for the Cox family.
Father/daughter tandem David and Rebecca each won their respective divisions at the Course Challenge Series disc golf tournament, which was held at Monroe Community Park and Turtlecreek Park.
David, 39, a 17-year disc golf player who is ranked fourth in the state of Ohio by the Pro Disc Golfers Association, won the open division with a two round score of 117, eight strokes ahead of second place Scott Burnett. Rebecca, 12, shot a 161 to win the advanced women's division by 14 strokes.
"That felt pretty good. I was really proud of her," David Cox said. "The thing I enjoy the most is when they call her up there and announce her score and some of the guys look at her and say 'she beat me.'"
David Cox, an Amelia resident and 1987 graduate of Kings High School who is currently studying Computer Aided Design at the University of Cincinnati's Clermont College, was introduced to disc golf while living in Clearwater, Fla.
"A friend of mine told me about it," he said. "I was always a pretty good frisbee thrower. One day he took me to the local course in Clearwater and I've been pretty much hooked ever since."
He introduced Rebecca to the sport four years ago.
"When she was about eight, I took her up to the local course and started letting her throw," he said. "She was pretty much a natural right from the get go."
David Cox, who is sponsored by disc manufacturer Discraft, will compete in the PDGA's "Deuce or Die" doubles tournament on Sunday, July 6 at Monroe Community Park.
The tournament was broken up into different divisions based on skill level. Other division winners were: Dan Hollingshead with a 124 in the advanced division, Don Lohman (153, advanced grandmasters), Gary Pettigrew (146, advanced masters), Ken Stultz (121, masters), Eric Terranova (139, novice), Dave Gambrell (128, open grandmaster) and Alex Hollingshead (176, novice women).
Saturday's Course Challenge Series event was a joint venture between the Greater Cincinnati Flying Disc Association and the Dayton Disc Golf Club. The two clubs will also combine for a July 19 tournament in Oxford.
"I really liked that," David Cox said. "I was playing against people I wouldn't play against unless it was an actual PDGA event."
