Beavercreek High School has stayed in-house for its new boys basketball coach, promoting 10-year assistant John Ahrns to the head coaching job.

He was offered the job on Saturday, May 31, and Athletic Director Ed Zink recommended his hiring to superintendent Denny Morrison on Monday. All that is left is for the board of education to give him the official blessing at its regular monthly meeting.

Ahrns, who worked one year under Larry Holden and a year for Buzz Seilhamer, replaces eight-year head coach Charlie Back, who resigned in April.

Beavercreek basketball has been a major part of the 31-year-old history teacher's life. Ahrns grew up playing in the Stars age-group programs, then the middle school, freshman and junior varsity programs, before finally becoming a varsity starter. He graduated in 1994, attended Miami University and returned to the district to teach.

"We had some good people from outside the district apply for the job, but most of them were assistants at other programs," Zink said. "If we were going to hire an assistant, we already had some good men on the staff. John has done an outstanding job in every position he's held.

"He knows all of the coaches in the system at every level. He knows all the guys who run the Stars programs and the AAU programs. He knows the families of most of the players in the program. So it'll be a smooth transition. I think he'll do an outstanding job."

Beavercreek went 12-11 last season, 5-5 in the Central Division of the Greater Western Ohio Conference, good for third place. Seven seniors — four starters and three reserves — graduated.
