COLUMBUS — It took a mammoth performance to beat Cedarville High School senior Katie Gerhardt in her final prep track and field meet.
On Friday, June 6, Gerhardt was state runner-up in the Division III discus with a toss of 153 feet, 5 inches at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. She also finished 11th in the shot put with a 36-8¾.

"I just went out and gave it my all," Gerhardt said.
Urbana senior Amy Evans finished fourth in the D-II discus with a toss of 128-1. A state meet record toss beat Gerhardt in the discus. Elmore Woodmore sophomore Erin Pendleton won her first state title with a toss of 168-10, besting the previous record of 163-4 set by her sister Emily in 2007.
The title has stayed in the family for five straight seasons with Emily winning four in a row followed by her younger sister.
For Gerhardt, it was toughing placing second in the discus, especially after finishing third last year. She knows it took a great performance by Erin Pendleton to beat her.
"I would rather lose to her than anyone else," Gerhardt said. "I respect her a lot for all the hard work she puts in."
Gerhardt has advanced to the state meet four times in the discus and three times in the shot put. Next year, she'll throw at Barton County Community College in Kansas.
In the last discus toss of her prep career, Evans got exactly what she was looking for — a school record.
Her toss beat the previous mark of 127-3 by former teammate Emily Alderfer.
Evans will compete in the D-II shot put at 9 a.m. today, but was excited to place her name in the record book at Urbana on her final throw in a Hillclimbers uniform.
"I've been waiting for this all year," Evans said.
