FAIRFIELD-PIQUA TICKETS AVAILABLE: Pre-sale tickets for Fairfield High School's home football game against Piqua on Friday night, Aug. 29 are available at the high school bookkeeper's office. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children and are available for purchase until 2:30 p.m. Friday.
THOMSON PARK REGISTERING BASEBALL, SOFTBALL TEAMS: Thomson Park, which is located 2.5 miles north of Hamilton on Ohio 177, is having fall league sign-ups from 6-8 p.m. at the park for fall baseball 13- and 14-year-olds, men's softball and women's softball. OHIO HAWKS FASTPITCH TRYOUTS IN AUGUST: The Ohio Hawks fast-pitch softball program is seeking players for the 2009 season. Tryouts for 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u and 18u teams will be held Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. at Rotary Park in Dayton, and at 6 p.m. at Franklin Community Park. Players need only to attend one of the locations.
SAWYER BROWN ADDING TO ROSTER: Middletown Sawyer Brown, a traveling youth 12U baseball team, will be adding players to its 2009 roster. Players may not turn 13 prior to May 1, 2009. MIDDLETOWN QUARTERBACK CLUB MEETS EVERY TUESDAY: The Middletown Quarterback Club will meet at noon every Tuesday during the high school football season at Wildwood Golf Club. New Middies coach Jason Krause will review film of the first two scrimmage games and will talk about the season opener with Elder in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown Aug. 23 at Nippert Stadium.
MONROE, MIDDLETOWN FOOTBALL COACHES ON RADIO: Jack Gordon will be live on WPFB-AM (910) again this football season with the new football coaches from Monroe and Middletown high schools. Gordon will broadcast from 7 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday beginning Aug. 20 with Hornets coach Ken Meibers from Wings and Rings in Monroe. Gordon will then be on the air from 7 to 8 p.m. every Thursday beginning Aug. 21 with Middies coach Jason Krause from BBQ Junction.
MIDDLETOWN STREET STRIDERS SUMMER SERIES: The 23rd annual Summer Series for the Middletown Street Striders will once again hold events on Wednesday nights at Smith Park. The remaining dates are: Aug. 20 and Sept. 10. Registration begins at 6 p.m. and the race begins at 6:30 p.m. Entry fee is $2 for members, $5 for non-members and $1 for students and seniors 60 and over. For more information, call (513) 422-9622.
MIDDIE ATHLETIC BOOSTERS WAFFLE BREAKFAST AUG. 30: The Middletown Middie Athletic Boosters will host a waffle breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 30 in the MHS cafeteria. The event is sponsored by the Hamilton Waffle House and all proceeds will go toward Middie Athletics. The fundraiser for all Middletown fall sports and is the kickoff event for the Middletown vs. Warren Central (Ind.) football game at Paul Brown Stadium later that day. Tickets are $5 per person. There will be door prizes as well.
SPIRIT WARRIORS BASKETBALL ACADEMY LOOKING FOR BOYS: The Spirit Warriors Basketball Academy is for boys in sixth through 12th grade. College level skills and drills are utilized. It starts Sept. 2, and runs through Oct. 30, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. The cost is $75 per person and it does not conflict with the school season. TICKETS ON SALE FOR FIRST TWO MIDDIE FOOTBALL GAMES: Tickets for Middletown High School's first two football games will be on sale at several locations in the city as well as the athletic office. Tickets for the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown and the Burger King Ohio vs. USA Kirk Herbstreit Challenge IV are available at Skyline Chili, Taste of Memphis Barbeque in Middletown. Tickets can also be purchased from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday in the athletic office. Tickets for the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown are $10 in advance and $13 day of the event. Tickets for the Burger King Ohio vs. USA Kirk Herbstreit Challenge are $14 for adults and $10 for students in advance and $16 day of the event. OHIO U. HOLDING BASEBALL PROSPECT CAMPS: The Ohio University baseball program has two prospect camps scheduled for late summer and early fall. The first will be Aug. 23, and the second will be Oct. 4. Each camp will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 6:30 p.m. The camp is restricted to 2009, 2010 and 2011 high school graduates. FALL BASKETBALL AT KINGDOM SPORTS CENTER: A fall basketball league for teams in grades 3-6 will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays beginning Sept. 9 at Kingdom Sports Center in Franklin. Cost is $350 per team for eight games. Deadline to register is Aug. 29. There will also be a Sunday league for players in grades 7-12 beginning Sept. 7. Cost is $85 per player for eight games. MARY ALICE MACK TOURNAMENT DATE CHANGES: The Mary Alice Mack Senior Women's tournament has been moved to Sept. 8 for this year's tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course. A continental breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start to follow at 8:30 a.m. The format is 18 holes medal play with five flights. The tournament is open to women golfers age 50 and older who have a current USGA handicap index and reside or play at a golf course within a 12-mile radius of the Middletown City Building. Entry fee is $55. Entry forms are available at Weatherwax or any of the local golf courses. Deadline to enter is Sept. 1. BLIZZARD MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT IS SEPT. 13: The Basil F. Blizzard IV Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro. Check-in/registration will be at 11:30 a.m., and the driving range and putting green will be open. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m., and a dinner with beverages and door prizes immediately following golf. The cost is $75 for single players or $300 for a foursome. PUNT, PASS, KICK COMING TO HHS: Young Cincinnati Bengals fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills when the Hamilton Parks and Recreation Department hosts a local competition of the NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick Competition on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Virgil Schwarm Stadium at Hamilton High School. The time of the competition will be from 10 a.m. to noon. The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 8–15. This activity is drop-in, so pre-registration is not necessary.
HELP ANIMALS WITH SCRAMBLE: The first Waggin' Tails Golf Scramble will be held Friday, Sept. 26, at Pebble Creek Country Club. The event, sponsored by the Animal Adoption Foundation, starts at noon and will cost $110 per golfer or $400 for a foursome. FATHER CHUCK MENTRUP GOLF MEMORIAL SEPT. 27: The first Father Chuck Mentrup Golf Memorial will be held Sept. 27 at Weatherwax Golf Course. The format is a four-person scrambel with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $100 per person ($400 per foursome) which includes golf, cart, use of driving range, shirt, lunch, drink tickets and dinner. The donation is tax deductible with all proceeds going to provide tuition assistance for students at local Catholic high schools including Alter, Fenwick, LaSalle, McAuley and St. Xavier. CLUB COLLECTING GOLF ITEMS FOR U.S. TROOPS: The Butler County Republican Women's Club is collecting new and used golf balls and tees for the troops. The soldiers have been hitting golf balls to relieve stress. Cash donations are needed. The cost to mail a package will be about $11. New white socks, which will be used as filler in the packing boxes, are also needed. Donations are being accepted at the GOP Headquarters, 59964 Golf Club Lane, during business hours.
